Overview
Your NWT health care card gives you access to medically necessary hospital and physician services in the Northwest Territories. This page explains what is included and what is not included under the NWT Health Care Plan.

Your NWT health care card covers medically necessary:
Know what is not covered by your NWT health care card
Your NWT health care card does not cover:
- Services that are not medically necessary
- Travel for medical appointments
- Prescription drugs
- Dental, vision, medical supplies, and similar benefits
- Costs for care outside Canada beyond the amount eligible for reimbursement
Other programs may cover some of these costs. Examples include Extended Health Benefits, Métis Health Benefits, and Medical Travel.
Understand coverage when you get care outside the NWT
If you receive insured physician or hospital services outside the territory:
- Services within Canada are billed through interprovincial agreements when possible
- Residents may need to submit receipts for eligible services depending on where the care occurred
