Workers' Safety and Compensation Commission
An arm's length government agency responsible for administering the Workers' Compensation Acts, Safety Acts, Explosives Use Acts and the Mine Health and Safety Acts.
Office of the Regulator of Oil and Gas Operations
Regulates operations outside of federally managed areas and the Inuvialuit Settlement Region for the primary purpose of ensuring saftey, environmental protection, and conservation of oil and gas reserves.
Boards A-Z
The GNWT is responsible for making nominations or appointments to a variety of public committees, boards and councils (public boards). These public boards have been created through legislation, intergovernmental agreements, or government policy. Appointments are made by Cabinet, the Commissioner in Executive Council or the responsible Minister(s).
The public boards play an important role from providing advice to government to managing public programs. In order for the public boards to fulfill their mandate, they must be made up of members who are qualified for the position and are committed to undertake the work of the board.
Agricultural Products Marketing Council
Responsible for hearing appeals and performing various oversight roles under the Agricultural Products Marketing Act and its regulations.
Apprenticeship, Trade and Occupation Certification Board
Reviews appeals and provides advice to the Minister of Education, Culture and Employment on matters pertaining to apprenticeship, skilled trades, and occupation certification.
Assessment Appeal Tribunal
Hears property assessment appeals made to it as a result of a decision from a municipal or territorial board of revision.
Aurora College Board of Governors
Responsible for overseeing and directing all matters respecting the management, administration, and control of Aurora College.
Beaufort Delta Regional Wellness Council
Provides advice regarding health and social services, priorities under the territorial health and social services plan, and the promotion of health and wellness.
Beverly and Qamanirjuaq Caribou Management Board
Provides advice and recommendations to the Governments of Canada, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Saskatchewan and Manitoba on matters concerning the protection and management of these herds and their habitat.
Dehcho Regional Wellness Council
Provides advice regarding health and social services, priorities under the territorial health and social services plan, and the promotion of health and wellness.
Dental Registration Committee
Reviews and decides upon applications from persons who wish to practice dentistry in the Northwest Territories.
Environmental Impact Review Board (Inuvialuit Settlement Region)
Carries out the environmental impact assessments and public review of development projects referred to it by the Environmental Impact Screening Committee.
Environmental Impact Screening Committee (Inuvialuit Settlement Region)
Conducts environmental screenings of development proposals or consequence within the Inuvialuit Settlement Region to determine whether it could have a significant negative impact on the environment or on wildlife harvesting.
Environmental Studies Management Board
Established to manage the Environmental Studies Research Fund. This fund finances environmental and social studies pertaining to oil and gas exploration, development, and production activities on lands within the NWT.
Fort Smith Regional Wellness Council
Provides advice regarding health and social services, priorities under the territorial health and social services plan, and the promotion of health and wellness.
Gwich'in Arbitration Panel
Created to resolve disputes in accordance with the Gwich’in Comprehensive Land Claim Agreement.
Gwich'in Land and Water Board
Considers applications for the use of land and waters and the deposit of waste in the Gwich’in Settlement Area.
Gwich'in Land Use Planning Board
Recommends a settlement area land use plan for approval to the territorial and federal governments and the Gwich’in Tribal Council. The Board may propose amendments to the approved plan, monitor compliance and conduct periodic reviews.
Gwich'in Renewable Resources Board
The main instrument of wildlife management in the Gwich’in Settlement Area.
Hay River Regional Wellness Council
Provides advice regarding health and social services, priorities under the territorial health and social services plan, and the promotion of health and wellness.
International Porcupine Caribou Board
Provides advice and recommendations to the Governments of Canada, Yukon, Northwest Territories, Alaska and the United States on matters relating to the protection and management of the porcupine caribou herd.
Inuvialuit Arbitration Board
Arbitrate any difference between the Inuvialuit, Industry, Governments of Canada, Northwest Territories or Yukon as to the meaning, interpretation, application or implementation of the Western Arctic (Inuvialuit) Final Agreement. It also hears appeals by individuals who have been denied eligibility or enrolment as a beneficiary of the Agreement.
Inuvialuit Water Board
Considers applications for the use of water and the deposit of waste into water in the Inuvialuit Settlement Region.
Judicial Appointments Advisory Committee
Makes recommendations to the Commissioner in Executive Council regarding the appointment of territorial judges. Similarly, the Committee makes recommendations to the Commissioner regarding the appointment of deputy territorial judges.
Judicial Council for Territorial Judges
Reviews and investigates allegations made against a territorial court judge. The Judicial Council may refer the complaint to the Chief Judge, a mediator, or hold a hearing.
Justices of the Peace Review Council
Receives, hears, and makes recommendations on complaints respecting justices of the peace referred by the Chief Judge.
Legal Aid Commission of the Northwest Territories
Responsible for legal aid services; hears appeals on the eligibility of people who have been denied legal aid, and creates strategies and policies to address the need for legal aid services in the Northwest Territories.
Liquor Licensing Board
Regulates the conduct of licence holders, the management and equipment of licensed premises, and the conditions under which liquor may be sold or consumed.
Mackenzie River Basin Board
Oversees the implementation of the Mackenzie River Basin Transboundary Waters Master Agreement. It provides advice and information on water management issues to support cooperative management and informed decision-making for the benefit of all jurisdictions with interests in the Mackenzie River Basin.
Mackenzie Valley Environmental Impact Review Board
The main instrument in the Mackenzie Valley for the environmental assessment and environmental impact review of developments.
Mackenzie Valley Land and Water Board
Considers applications for the use of land and waters and the deposit of waste for any development that will have impact in a region with no land claim settlement.
Medical Registration Committee
Reviews and decides upon applications from persons who wish to practice medicine in the Northwest Territories.
Mental Health Review Board
Created to help protect the rights of individuals under the Mental Health Act. Any person held involuntarily who wishes to appeal a decision made by their doctor can apply to the Board for a hearing. Others can also apply to the Board on the patient’s behalf.
Mine Occupational Health and Safety Legislation Committee
Established to advise and make recommendations on matters concerning the Mine Health and Safety Act and regulations.
Natural Resources Conservation Trust Fund Board of Trustees
The Board of Trustees manages the fund established to promote through education, research and demonstration, the wise use of renewable resources.
Northwest Territories Arts Council
The NWT Arts Council provides recommendations to the Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment on financial awards for creative artistic projects in the film and media arts, visual, literary and performing arts, and on issues and policies associated with the arts and artists.
Northwest Territories Egg Producers Board
The Board is responsible for administering the industry’s implementation of the regulated egg marketing system in the NWT.
Northwest Territories Judicial Remuneration Commission
The Commission conducts inquiries with respect to the salaries paid to territorial judges and the pension, vacation leave, sick leave and other benefits provided to territorial judges and makes recommendations to the Minister of Justice.
Northwest Territories Law Foundation
The Law Foundation's primary purpose is to receive and manage the interest generated from clients' funds held by lawyers in mixed trust accounts.
Northwest Territories Power Corporation (Board of Directors)
The Board of Directors provides strategic oversight and governance for NTPC and NT Hydro. The Board will guide long-term planning, financial accountability, and operational stability.
Northwest Territories Review Board
The Board is established to make or review dispositions concerning any accused persons who have been found by a court to be unfit to stand trial or not be criminally responsible by reason of mental disorder.
NWT Surface Rights Board
The Board is established to resolve matters in dispute relating to access to Gwich’in, Sahtu, Tłı̨chǫ and Inuvialuit lands, and the waters overlying those lands, as well as, surface access to land in unsettled areas.
Northwest Territories Social Assistance Appeal Board
The Board is established to hear appeals arising out of decisions made by the Social Assistance Appeal Committees established under the Social Assistance Act.
Official Languages Board
The Board is established to advise and make recommendations to the Minister of Education, Culture and Employment with respect to any matter within its purview. Its focus is on services.
Porcupine Caribou Management Board
The Porcupine Caribou Management Board is a joint management board to manage, protect and maintain the Porcupine herd’s habitat within Canada.
Prosper NWT Board of Directors
The Board of Directors is responsible for directing the operations of Prosper NWT, formerly known as the Northwest Territories Business Development and Investment Corporation (BDIC), taking into account sustainable development and capacity building.
Public Utilities Board
The Northwest Territories Public Utilities Board regulates the public utilities under its jurisdiction by reviewing the affairs, earnings and accounts of each public utility.
Safety Advisory Committee
The Safety Advisory Committee shall make recommendations respecting amendments to the Safety Act and regulations as may be required or desirable in the interests of occupational health and safety.
Sahtu Arbitration Panel
The Sahtu Arbitration Panel was created to resolve disputes in accordance with the Sahtu Dene and Metis Comprehensive Land Claim Agreement.
Sahtu Land and Water Board
The Sahtu Land and Water Board considers applications for the use of land and waters and the deposit of waste in the Sahtu Settlement Area.
Sahtu Land Use Planning Board
The Sahtu Land Use Planning Board recommends a settlement area land use plan for approval of the territorial and federal governments and the Sahtu Secretariat Incorporated.
Sahtu Regional Wellness Council
The Sahtu Regional Wellness Council (RWC) serves as an advisory body to the Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Leadership Council. The RWC provides advice regarding health and social services, priorities under the territorial health and social services plan, and the promotion of health and wellness.
Sahtu Renewable Resources Board
The Sahtu Renewable Resources Board is the main instrument of wildlife management in the Sahtu Settlement Area.
Status of Women Council of the Northwest Territories
The objectives of the Council is to play an important role in developing awareness of issues affecting the status of women, promoting changes so that women may enjoy equality of opportunity in all aspects of society and to advise the Minister on relevant issues.
Student Financial Assistance Appeal Board
The Student Financial Assistance Appeal Board is established to hear appeals arising from the administrative review of decisions regarding student financial assistance.
Territorial Board of Revision
The Territorial Board of Revision shall hear appeals related to the assessment of land and improvements to properties in the Northwest Territories.
Tłı̨chǫ Community Services Agency
The Tłı̨chǫ Community Services Agency is responsible to manage, control, and operate the health facility or social services facility in the Tłı̨chǫ Region.
Ts’udé Nilįné Tuyeta Management Board
Established in 2020 to assist the K’asho Got’ı̨nę and the Government of Northwest Territories in the planning, operation, and management of Ts’udé Nilįné Tuyeta, a protected area.
Victims Assistance Committee
The Committee advises the Minister of Justice on policies for the provision of services for victims of crime and makes recommendations on the distribution of the Victims Assistance Fund.
Waste Reduction and Recovery Advisory Committee
The purpose of the Committee is to advise the Minister of Environment and Climate Change on the establishment and operation of programs to ensure improved reduction and recovery of waste.
Wek'eezhii Land and Water Board
The Wek’eezhii Land and Water Board considers applications for the use of land and waters and the deposit of waste throughout the Wek’eezhii area except in a national park or a national historic park or site administered by Parks Canada.
Wek'eezhii Renewable Resources Board
The Wek’eezhii Renewable Resources Board is responsible for managing wildlife and wildlife habitat in the Wek’eezhii area.
Wildlife Management Advisory Council (NWT)
The mandate of the Council is to advise appropriate Ministers on all matters relating to policy, legislation, regulation and administration respecting wildlife, habitat, harvesting, conservation, research and management in the Western Arctic Region.
Workers' Compensation Appeals Tribunal
The Appeals Tribunal is the final level of the appeal process and hears appeals regarding decisions from the Workers' Safety and Compensation Commission Review Committee.
