YELLOWKNIFE(February 4, 2016) – Wolverine, arctic, cross and red fox furs, many harvested in the Northwest Territories (NWT), sold out at the season opening sale of wild fur held January 25 in North Bay, Ontario.
“Our trappers are the very best in their trade – and as a result, so is the fur they ship to market,” says Minister of Industry Tourism and Investment Bob McLeod. “Our program is the envy of the Canadian trapping industry. Especially in our more remote communities, it provides a significant measure of economic stability in these times of volatility in the international marketplace.”
Sales of arctic wolf and black bear furs followed closely, with 93% and 96% being sold.
Wolf pelts received the highest bids, with an average of $353.90 per pelt with a top price of $661.50. Wolverines averaged $311.35 per pelt with a top price of $432.00.
“We are very pleased with these results,” says Minister of Environment and Natural Resources Wally Schumann. “Northern trappers are the backbone of the traditional economy. These numbers reflect the quality of their work.”
NWT furs were sold as part of the Government of Northwest Territories Genuine Mackenzie Valley Fur Program (GMVF), which provides one-window access to international markets for NWT trappers.
More than $460,000 has been paid out in the form of advances to NWT trappers under the GMVF program this season. An estimated 10,000 pelts have been delivered to auction by NWT trappers since November 1, 2015.
