Intergovernmental Meeting between Northwest Territory Métis Nation and GNWT

HAY RIVER (April 26, 2016) – Premier Bob McLeod and Members of the Executive Council of the 18th Legislative Assembly met with the Northwest Territory Métis Nation (NWTMN) on Friday, April 22nd in Hay River.
One of the priorities of the 18th Legislative Assembly is collaborating and fostering strong government-to-government relationships with Aboriginal Governments. This is the first meeting between the two governments since the start of the 18th Assembly and builds on the spirit of respect, recognition and responsibility.
Premier Bob McLeod and President Garry Bailey agree that bilateral meetings continue to strengthen the government-to-government relationship as outlined in the Memorandum of Understanding.
The meeting focused on areas of mutual interest, including:
The GNWT provided an update on the Fiscal situation
Discussion occurred on Federal/Provincial/Territorial Meetings which included Climate Change, the Aboriginal Affairs Working Group and Violence against women and girls
Economic development issues in the NWTMN area was discussed along with market disruption concerns
The GNWT and NWTMN had discussions regarding the Taltson Dam
The issue of Cabin Taxation was discussed
An update was provided on the Skills 4 Success Framework
Health Care issues was discussed by the GNWT and NWTMN; this included concerns about youth mental health and elders’ medical travel
Discussion also occurred on negotiation issues such as generalized interest and early land transfer
Housing concerns of the membership of the NWTMN was discussed
And finally the GNWT Affirmative Action Statistics and the Regional Recruitment Program was discussed
This was the fourth meeting of the and the GNWT since they signed an intergovernmental agreement on November 28, 2012.
