Seniors and Disabled Persons Property Tax Relief
Funding to help seniors and people with disabilities pay less or no property tax.
How to apply
For residents in a Municipal Taxation Authority – Fort Simpon, Fort Smith, Hay River, Inuvik, Norman Wells or Yellowknife – contact your community government to apply.
Municipal Taxation Authorities are responsible for the program in their communities, and how much property tax is deducted depends on the community.
For residents in the General Taxation Area, fill out the Senior Citizens and Disabled Persons Property Tax Relief Application and Declaration Form in person or online to apply. Send your completed for to your MACA Regional Office or Local Government Service Officer.
For communities in the General Taxation Area, the GNWT provides a 100% rebate to qualified citizens.
You must apply for this program every year.

You do not need to be the sole owner of the property to be eligible for this funding.
Seniors
To qualify as a senior citizen, you must be 65 years old on or before December 31 of the current property taxation year.
Disabled Persons
To qualify as a person with a disability, you must receive a pension or allowance for:
- A total disability or a partial disability of at least 25% under the Workers Compensation Act;
- A severe and prolonged disability under the Canada Pension Plan; or
- A disability of at least 50% under the War Veterans Allowance Act.
You are not required to submit a medical certificate if you receive one of the above pensions or allowances.
If you do not receive a pension or allowance for total or partial disability, you must include a medical certificate in your application that indicates you suffer from a severe or prolonged disability and that sets out the nature and extent of the disability.
